GENE BUTLER - SONGWRITER/GUITAR/VOCALS

Growing up in Macon, Georgia in the 60’s, where he was a member of the Cotton Street Gospel Choir, Gene Butler was surrounded by the music of Otis Redding, the Allman Brothers, Little Richard and the inspiring gospel music that would emanate out of the black churches on a Sunday Morning. At a young age Gene knew that music was as close to heaven as the human soul could get. Little wonder that music was the path his life would take.

Butler wrote his first song ‘Momma, Wish I'd Listened To You’ in collaboration with his best friend, Larry Crawford, after they spent a night in jail for violating Macon's "under eighteen" ten o'clock curfew law. They were both ten years old at the time and Butler still sings the acapella song during his show but makes a point of performing it before ten o'clock.

Since his very first song, Gene Butler has lived a life and career working in music, film and theatre arts. The Georgia native moved to Los Angeles where his career flourished with numerous roles in film and television. He’s appeared in Beverly Hills Cop II, The Lazarus Man, ER, T.J. Hooker, Perry Mason, MacGyver, Walker-Texas Ranger, Hill Street Blues, Dynasty and Hunter, as well as over 75 theatre productions. On-stage, he was a 1977 Joseph Jefferson Award nominee for Best Actor in a Principal Role for his performance in P.S. Your Cat is Dead at Pheasant Run Theatre in Chicago, IL. His original plays have earned five Dramalogue Awards, the Elaine Welton Hill Award for Writing and over 5 Best Play of the Year awards.

His hundred-plus original songs have been called ‘Concrete Americana’ but with plenty of roots country, blues and rock mixed in. They have been placed in both film and television including Nothing Impossible, The Gilmore Girls, Holyman Undercover, Armadillo, The Little Acorn, Wrong Way, New York, Sirens and Malibu Dan; the Family Man.
